The Challenge of Turning Alicante into an International Capital of Contemporary Art

Shortly before celebrating its first anniversary in the city of Alicante, the Vearte gallery has reason to celebrate. Its director, Laura León, has been selected as the curator for the fifth edition of the International Art Biennial of Armenia (Biarco) with the challenge of turning Alicante into a capital of this genre.

The gallery's responsibility also includes serving as an 'aggregating and promoting agent for the event in Europe,' León explains, with a focus on Alicante, Spain, and neighboring countries connected by the Mediterranean. In this regard, her initial goal is to attract artists and promote the initiative.

Thus, the selected works in the fifth Biarco will form a 'world exhibition,' whose challenge is to bring all pieces to Alicante so they can be admired by the public and also open doors to 'many latitudes' for artists from all over, including 'masters and emerging talents' alongside many other categories, emphasizes the curator.

At present, sixteen countries are participating in this artistic initiative. Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, the United States, and much of Latin America. Each artist will bring their own style and trend, as Biarco is capable of 'encompassing all kinds of disciplines since it is open to contemporary art.'

'It is an opportunity to transcend borders and reach other levels of international art,' which Biarco aims to achieve through León's work in the city of Alicante.

Additionally, the physical exhibition will have greater projection and number of works, as it is being developed parallelly with other galleries from different continents to create a virtual showcase that will display a larger quantity of works through digital screens, as well as live meetings from each country to 'discuss various art topics.'
