Casa Mediterráneo hosts the 24th annual meeting of the Spanish network of the Anna Lindh Foundation this Tuesday, aiming to foster intercultural dialogue between both shores of the Mare Nostrum. This gathering will also enhance the role of civil society as a key player in addressing the region's global challenges.
Therefore, more than 40 Spanish civil society organisations, along with experts, leaders, and representatives from entities working in the field of international cooperation, will convene at the old Benalúa station until Wednesday, February 19.
The inauguration of this meeting will feature the Director General of Casa Mediterráneo, Andrés Perelló; the Executive President of IEMed, Senén Florensa; the Executive Director of the Anna Lindh Foundation in Alexandria (Egypt), Josep Ferré; and the Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs, Diego Martínez Belío.
Over two days, attendees will analyse current challenges and share initiatives to strengthen mutual understanding and social cohesion in the Mediterranean, as well as develop a roadmap for 2025-2026 to continue promoting intercultural cooperation.
Among the highlighted activities, an introductory session on the role of Mediterranean civil society will be held, moderated by Bosnian journalist based in Valencia, Esma Kucukalic; and a 'Market of Ideas and Projects', where innovative initiatives driven by participating organisations will be presented.
The meeting also includes a space dedicated to exploring how artificial intelligence can contribute to social cohesion, with a visit to the Ellis Foundation and a lecture by its director, Nuria Oliver.
Journalist Daniel Sousa has won the second edition of the International Journalism and Sustainable Tourism Award, city of Xàbia, with his podcast 'It's not tourismphobia, it's urbanophobia'. The winning programme includes messages such as: "The centres of major tourist cities are left without residents, without local shops, neighbourhoods are broken, housing prices soar, and there is a significant loss of city identity." The article also highlights that citizens demand answers from an administration unable to manage the negative effects of tourism, and the jury praised the author's originality in addressing environmental conservation in tourist destinations, as well as the protection and appreciation of cultural heritage in tourist areas. The Director General of Casa Mediterráneo, Andrés Perelló, congratulated the award winner, stating that "we have organised this together with the city of Xàbia, to whom we also express our gratitude for the ongoing collaboration with Casa Mediterráneo, and we consider it a way to both promote tourism and highlight the role that media and journalists specialising in this field play in disseminating values." Meanwhile, the Mayor of Xàbia, Rosa Cardona, highlighted the high quality of the works submitted to the competition, "they are a testament to the consolidation of this award." She also expressed her satisfaction with the collaboration with Casa Mediterráneo to promote these awards, which "we hope will become a reference in tourism and sustainable journalism and enable Xàbia to be a hub in this regard."
