The Federation of Moors and Christians of Alicante has a new flag bearer. Marina Hernández García, a festival participant from the Caballeros del Cid group in El Rebolledo, took over the role this Sunday from Mari Carmen Reus.
This entity brings together the various Moors and Christians festivals in the city of Alicante, recognized as of Tourist Interest by the Generalitat, with more than two thousand participants from Villafranqueza-El Palamó, El Rebolledo, and Altozano.
The Moors and Christians of Alicante celebrated the traditional handover ceremony of their flag bearer under the theme 'Eclipse', highlighting the fusion of Moorish and Christian cultures. Artificial intelligence was featured through two audiovisual presentations.
The projections transported attendees to the origins of these Moors and Christians of Alicante celebrations, using light and its influence as a guiding thread. Gisella Comíns' ballet also performed two dances dedicated to the sun and the moon.
Mayor Luis Barcala attended the event, accompanied by the Councillor for Festivals, Cristina Cutanda; the Councillor for Infrastructure, Cristina García; the Councillor for Security, Julio Calero, and members of the Municipal Corporation. The mayor stated that "the entirety of these celebrations, which take place throughout the year, enhance Alicante's external image and consolidate one of its identity marks."
The event also saw the presence of the president of the Union of Festival Entities of Moors and Christians (UNDEF), Pepa Prats; the president of the Association of Moors and Christians Groups of San Blas, Mar Marín Aracil; the presidents of Villafranqueza-El Palamó, Antonio Mas; Rebolledo, Vanesa Sánchez; and Altozano, Maribel Valero. Additionally, the flag bearers of Villafranqueza, Sara López; Rebolledo, Marina Moltó, and Altozano, Daniel Martínez, were present. The pasodoble 'Alicante Mora y Cristiana', composed by Rubén Urbán and considered the Official Anthem of the FMYCA, was played during the event.
