The Generalitat continues to take firm steps to tackle the threat of illegal tourist apartments. The councillor confirmed on Thursday morning that soon they will initiate proceedings to deregister 34,000 vacation homes from the registry. Read more.

Just a few hours later, an agreement was signed between the Generalitat, the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FVMP), and the municipalities of Alicante, Elche, Benidorm, and Torrevieja, as well as Valencia and Castellón de la Plana. This manifesto officially grants local councils the power to sanction in matters of tourist accommodations.

Thus, before the grand presentation for the 'Day of the Community' at the Community's stand, this agreement was formalised in the presence of the mayors of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón; Elche, Pablo Ruz; Alicante, Luis Barcala; and Benidorm, Toni Pérez, along with the president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, and the Tourism Councillor, Marián Cano.

It was in the central square where this agreement was signed, aiming to materialise the intention of these municipalities to adhere to the Generalitat's law that seeks to curb the proliferation of illegal tourist apartments.

Thus, these Alicante councils will be able to, through their Local Police, manage and resolve sanctioning procedures for violations in the tourist accommodation sector. The municipalities of Alicante, Elche, Benidorm, and Torrevieja will be able to collect the fines they impose, which will be added to the municipal coffers as local revenue.

In the case of Alicante, the city's mayor has assured that the purpose of this agreement "is not to prohibit, but to regulate and establish the foundations for the present and future of the city, but, let it be clear, we will not allow any illegality in this area".

The agreement thus allows for the continuation of the collaborative work line that was promoted in its day with this rule by the Tourism Department, based on the support of the municipalities. The agreement includes the transfer of competencies to the councils and will be valid for five years, with the possibility of extension for another five, and can be terminated by any of the parties with a written notice thirty days in advance.

The Generalitat insists that with this signing, "institutional representatives show their firm commitment to strengthening regulated and sustainable tourism, reinforcing inter-administrative collaboration and providing municipalities with the necessary tools to act autonomously and effectively in controlling tourist accommodations in their respective territories".

In this regard, the president endorsed the councillor's words in his statements to the media regarding a stricter and more effective regulation to promote "more sustainable tourism that respects local norms".
