Karol G, the Queen of the Stadium

Who is La Bichota, the muse emerging from reggaeton streaming, breaking new audience records with 240,000 people over four sold-out nights at the Bernabéu Stadium?

Where men in shorts chase a ball, Karol G sets up a nightclub with booming bass and subsonics, turning individuals into a single rhythmic entity that falls perfectly in line with each beat marked by the electronics. Originality is overrated. The party is not. And people appreciate the energy release, responding with long ovations.

"This ass won’t forget you," "do you like your ass?" "you might run into my ass, I feel like a boss without going out," sings La Bichota with the double meaning of the word "ass" in Latin America, where it also means 'partner.' Similarly, 'bicha' is used for a determined and aggressive woman, much like her songs, which feature usual beats and certain nods to coastal rhythms (Caribbean, Atlantic, Pacific) of South America.

Always modest like her tattoos, small here and there, and close to her fans: she stops to greet them, gives three kisses to a fan who asked for them on a sign, visits children undergoing cancer treatment in Madrid, prefers rice with fried egg and meat from her mother and admits that "I've never been very 'into the fashion world'." But she is into long hair dyed yellow, blue or red. Lots of sparkles and lots of pink. Pink dominates the images shared by attendees from last night's show. More women than men. This stop was announced in November. People waited at the entrance since the afternoon in nearly 40-degree heat with tickets bought since December.

If the Bernabéu is the measure of success, Karol G doubles Taylor Swift. About 60,000 spectators per night. Totaling 240,000. Tickets ranged from 60 euros in a distant lateral with reduced visibility to 400 euros in the closest area. Almost everything sold out. Resale prices reached up to 2,300 euros. Calculations point to about 180 million euros in revenue, also boosted by merchandise sales between 60 and 120 euros for t-shirts. There's no shortage of merchandise. Some mothers complained between lines and on camera about the expense to make their daughters happy. "Money comes and goes, but this only happens once," said a fan who came from afar.

Fairies without a ball

The woman who fills four stadiums in four nights became popular beyond the Hispanic youth universe or platform listeners through ticket sales alone. Having become a phenomenon several years ago, she was chosen to sing Colombia's anthem at the recent Copa América final and is known in Spain as Shakira's partner in 'Te quedó grande,' when Piqué's ex sang about her heartbreak.

Football and music have other intersections besides turning a testosterone temple into a safe space. Her concerts have moments for heartache between dances and long camaraderie with her audience. As if cheering for a goal for three minutes straight, attendees strained their voices for each song. One after another, it was like a match with twenty goals.

Queen of an audience that watches concerts through their phones, La Bichota wraps them in a fairy tale with some self-help elements. There's good literature in Carolina's story, whose "world turned dark and gray." In the metaphor, her 'alter ego' rebels. "Her determination set no limits on what she could achieve. Carolina didn't let anything bring her down. She has unstoppable strength," says an off-screen voice. "There's a bichota inside each one of you; you just need to find your true self like Carolina did."

But she, owner of a voluptuous body embraced by Instagram's generation over runway thinness, prefers to say with her voice "for dryness we drink something; when we get drunk we play no reggaeton and go where we can love each other."

Daughter of a musician, Carolina Giraldo emerged from 'Factor X' in 2006, the Colombian franchise of a reality show and signed with Universal, which made a strong bet on her already turned into Karol G. Her first duet tracks were with mid-level artists in the genre like Reykon or Nicky Jam between 2012 and 2013 until four years later she had a single with established Bad Bunny and moved from singles to an album. Her personal life also served as promotion through her relationship with another famous singer Anuel AA.

Born in Medellín, Colombia’s carnival land 33 years ago and residing in Miami (United States), she broke YouTube viewing records five years ago with a collaboration with Daddy Yankee and Ozuna. She reached new heights with her next album until now. 'Mañana será bonito' earned her several Grammy awards and featured collaborations with Shakira and Nicki Minaj. Now she sets new records with her perreo style music. "What would have happened if I had met you before," she sings.
