Baleària reduced its carbon footprint in freight transport last year: its CO2 emissions per linear metre decreased by 4.9% compared to the previous year. In total, the company, a leader in sustainability, prevented the emission of 15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide thanks to more efficient operations and a 184% increase in the use of natural gas, among other actions. The company, a leader in passenger and freight transport in Spain, is once again present at the International Logistics and Transport Exhibition in Barcelona 2025 (SIL), with its own stand, where it presents its comprehensive and sustainable service. Additionally, the stand will host the talk 'Innovation and Clean Energy for Responsible Logistics', featuring Maximiliano Bermejo, Director of Cargo, and Javier Cervera, Head of Energy Transition, on Thursday 19th at 1pm.
The General Director of Baleària, Georges Bassoul, highlights the crucial role of Baleària in ensuring freight transport in the territories where it operates. "Reliability, punctuality, and adaptation to the logistical demands of customers are some of our commitments to guarantee impeccable service in all our daily connections." In 2024, Baleària transported 7.6 million linear metres of cargo in the holds of its ships, equivalent to around 564,000 trucks, with a 3% growth compared to the previous year. National routes accounted for 70% of the cargo, while by type of goods, food and beverages (23%), groupage (16%), and construction materials (11%) were the main products transported.
National Routes
60% of the shipping company's cargo is concentrated in the Balearic Islands, where in 2024 it managed to maintain the same linear metres of cargo as the previous year, in a highly competitive context. The company has six ferries, some of which run on gas, connecting the mainland with the Balearic Islands (from the ports of Barcelona and Valencia to Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza) and complements the service with two fast ferries. Additionally, it has three other ships in the Balearic Islands, one of them electric, ensuring inter-island service throughout the year and providing reinforcement during the high season. Thus, it is the only operator with a comprehensive service to the Balearic Islands, a contribution that represents a significant advantage over other transport companies.
With scheduled arrivals early in the morning, the company optimises each trip to the islands, allowing the return to be made on the same day. "This operational efficiency not only benefits Baleària and its customers but also contributes to the economic development of non-mainland territories, facilitating reliable and safe freight transport," says Bassoul.
In Melilla, it operates with an electric propulsion ferry from the port of Malaga. In Ceuta, the company manages the public line with a ferry and complements it with a fast ferry, reaching ten daily services, while with the Canary Islands it operates with two ferries with dual gas engines, offering between three and four weekly departures.
Routes with Morocco and Algeria
In connections with Morocco, Baleària offers ten daily services to Tangier Med from Algeciras, and a connection from Motril, as well as daily services between Almeria and Nador. In 2024, Morocco experienced an 8% growth and accounted for 30% of the total cargo, establishing itself as a clear axis of future development. Additionally, the company makes several weekly departures to Algeria, in the ports of Mostaganem, Algiers, and Oran.
