Avenida Torres de la Huerta. This is the name chosen by the Alicante City Council for the street that was previously dedicated to Father Ángel Escapa, whose name was removed after two cases of sexual abuse attributed to the Augustinian clergyman in the 1970s were made public last weekend.
This was announced on Tuesday by the governing team, which made the decision official at the local council meeting held in the morning, exceptionally at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, the Marq.
The Torres de la Huerta were built during the 16th and 17th centuries in the so-called Alicante orchard, a piece of land located northeast of the city of Alicante, irrigated by the waters of the Tibi reservoir through a complex system of ditches and dedicated to vine cultivation.
To mitigate attacks from pirates attracted by the wealth, a defensive system was developed that consisted of detecting the presence of hostile ships through a network of watchtowers along the coast. In this way, rapid warnings were given from one tower to another and to nearby populations.
