The Principal Theatre of Alicante is in full celebration. The venue recorded the highest number of attendees in its history during 2024, a total of 107,233 spectators. This marks a six percent increase from its last major record, set in 2013 with 104,000 visitors.
The view from the theatre's stage and offices is set on increasing this figure during the current 2025 season, although the main goal of its deputy director, María Dolores Padilla, is to "increase the proposals and the offer," which is closely linked to the number of spectators.
The head of Alicante's Principal Theatre announced this record-breaking figure on Friday during the presentation of the complete programme for the first half of the year. While the advance from February to March already includes 44 proposals, the full season boasts 76 shows. The schedule features double performance days, more shows than usual in recent years, and also large productions.
"Our programming aims to meet the needs of Alicante residents and visitors," Padilla emphasized during the presentation. She also maintained that the 32 additional events in the season are designed for "all tastes and ages," through a "quality" programme. Highlights include eleven theatrical pieces, seven concerts, three dance performances, a musical, and an opera, along with new comedy shows.
The regional secretary of Culture, Pilar Tébar, also participated in the presentation of this "ambitious programme with a multitude of shows in different formats, varied and attractive to the general public, with theatre, dance, music, and even opera, which also welcomes younger audiences," she highlighted; alongside the regional director of Alicante Centro-Banco Sabadell, Ana Ponsoda, who valued "the work of all the professionals behind it and their commitment to offering high-level shows."
The Principal Theatre of Alicante will host the performance of 'A Streetcar Named Desire' by Tennessee Williams on March 23, as an addition to the preview presented last December. The show will feature Nathalie Poza, Pablo Derqui, María Vázquez, Jorge Usón, Carmen Barrantes, Romulo Assereto, Mario Alonso, and Carlos Carracedo in the cast.
In terms of drama, the season will continue with 'All Birds' by Wajdi Mouawad on April 5; followed by 'A Mother of a Movie' with Toni Acosta the next day. This month continues with 'Life is a Game' by the National Classical Theatre Company; as well as 'The Great Theatre of the World' by Calderón de la Barca, and 'The Mousetrap' by Agatha Christie.
