The best potato omelette is in A Coruña. This was decided by the jury of the XVII edition of the Spanish Potato Omelette Championship, held this Sundayat Alicante Gastronómica. It was the elaboration of Ramón Rodríguez, from the Galician restaurant O Cabo, that won the first prize.
The second prize went to Alejandro Oliveira from La Falda (Madrid) and the third prize was won by Samu Curbeira, from Café Ankha in El Ferrol. The winner received the award at the gastronomic event held at IFA from the hands of the president of the Provincial Council of Alicante, Toni Pérez.
The winner stated that his omelette is "very simple, it has nothing special, everyone likes it." The Galician establishment highlighted that "the most difficult thing is the competition and the high level of all participants."
The team led by Rodríguez hopes and trusts that the public and customers will appreciate the effort and the award achieved, which "represents great recognition for all the years of work we have accumulated in this world of gastronomy."
The participants of this new edition were Alberto García Ponte, from Mesón O Pote (Betanzos); Alejandro Oliveira, from La Falda (Madrid); Ricardo Martín, from Posada Pradorey (Gumiel del Mercado); Pedro José Román, from Cañadío (Santander); Ramón Rodríguez, from O Cabo (A Coruña); Ángel Marugal, La Concordia (Logroño); Celia Clara Correia, la Teulada Cafetería (Elche); Javier Izquierdo, Mesón El Viso (Gumiel del Mercado); Alberto Villegas, from San Remo (Palencia); Borja Olano, Kapadokia Gastrobar (San Sebastián); Carlos Olabuenaga, from Tizona (Logroño); Raúl Rubio, Txiki Bar y Tortillería (Vitoria-Gasteiz); Dana Rotaru, from Nou Pinet (Alicante); Carlos Boado, from El Caserío de Tión (Coíros); Samuel Curbeira, from Ankha Cafetería (Ferrol); Adrián Cuevas, from Hotel Cortijo Santa Cruz (Villanueva de la Serena); and Kamela Meghazi, from Kutako Taberna (Betanzos).
As for previous champions, the 2022 title went to Betanzos at Mesón O Pote by Alberto García Ponte and Carlos Olabuenga from Tizona in Logroño. Meanwhilethe best omeletteof 2023 was made by Pedro José Román from Cañadío in Santander.
The president of the jury of the Tescoma Trophy, Rafael García, stated that there was a "high level" where a large number of omelettes scored above eight points, "which demonstrates the difficulty in determining the champion of this edition."
The jury responsible for evaluating the omelettes was composed of personalities from the culinary world including journalist Pepa Fernández as well as José Gómez 'Joselito', Paco Torreblanca, Kiko Moya (L'Escaleta), Carme Ruscalleda (Moments Mandarin Oriental), Fran Martínez (Maralba), Alberto Ferruz (BonAmb), and Senén González (La Cocina de Senén).
