After a 2024 in which the airport broke the historical passenger record two months before the end of the year, 2025 begins with good news for the Alicante terminal. The airport operator, Aena, has initiated the expansion of Alicante-Elche Airport, one of the most prominent demands of the last year and a half, and which is currently the alternative to the much-requested second runway.

Thus, Aena has put out to tender the project for the adaptation of the terminal area and the movement area (platform and taxiways) of the Alicante aerodrome, with the aim of "meeting future traffic demand, improving passenger service quality, and gaining operational efficiency," according to a statement from the Ministry of Transport.

Specifically, the operator has launched a public tender for the Technical Assistance for Project Drafting (ATRP) to define all the necessary works in the airport's renovation. The main actions focus on the terminal building but also include the aircraft parking platform, new commercial spaces, roadworks, access and urbanisation, cargo area, and a new General Aviation Terminal.

The drafting of this project alone involves an amount of nearly 20 million euros, and these actions corresponding to this file will be included in the DORA III proposal (2027-2031). These actions are expected to enable the airport to meet future demand, which will grow exponentially in the coming years.

According to Aena, investments associated with the terminal buildings will be discussed at Aena's proposal in the mandatory consultation process with airlines, a procedure regulated by the 2014 Act involving, among others, the National Commission on Markets and Competition and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

Once proposed to users, they will be shared with the Regional Airport Coordination Committee, which includes representatives from the Valencian Government, as well as other national and local administrations, and the region's economic and social sectors.

After all these steps and once approved, all points will be reflected in Aena's investment plan, also known as the Airport Regulation Document DORA 2027-2031, which will include this investment to expand the airport.
