Car sales in 2024 have exceeded one million units, marking a 7.1% increase from the previous year. Specifically, 1,016,885 units were sold, a milestone not reached since before the pandemic began four years ago, according to data from the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac).
This achievement is largely attributed to the strong performance in December, which saw a 28.8% increase compared to the same month in 2023, with 105,346 units sold. December emerged as the best month of the year for the first time on record, driven by a final sales push from both private buyers and rental companies. "Approximately 20,000 more cars were sold than expected, with around 6,000 sales following the DANA event in Valencia," Anfac noted.
Sales of electrified vehicles (BEV+PHEV) also ended 2024 on a positive note, with a 1.9% increase, totaling 115,939 units. Despite closing December with a 14.4% market share and a slight increase in volume, the annual total represents 11.4% of all sales, six-tenths lower than in 2023, when they reached 12%.
Regarding sales channels, the strong performance in the private, corporate, and rental markets in the last month was crucial in surpassing the one million unit mark by year-end. Specifically, private sales reached 456,993 units, an 8.9% increase. Similarly, rental companies acquired 186,126 units, marking a 36.8% rise. Meanwhile, corporate sales totaled 373,826 units, experiencing a slight decline of 5.1%.
Light commercial vehicle registrations increased by 10.7% in December, with 14,532 units sold. Over the year, 165,847 units were registered, reflecting a 13.6% annual increase. All sales channels saw growth compared to the previous year. Specifically, corporate sales rose to 116,466 units, an 8.9% increase. Sales to self-employed individuals grew by 24.1%, with 27,896 units sold. Similarly, the rental channel reached 21,485 units, marking an 8.9% increase.
Finally, registrations of industrial vehicles, buses, coaches, and minibuses fell by 14.8% in December, with 2,629 units sold. Despite this decline in the last month, sales in 2024 grew by 12.5%, totaling 36,509 new units. Specifically, industrial vehicle sales reached 32,140 units, a 12% increase, while the bus, coach, and minibus market added 4,369 units, representing a 15.9% increase for the year.
