The PPCV Urges Government to Expedite Works to Extend the Mediterranean Corridor to Alicante

The PPCV has demanded that Pedro Sánchez's government expedite the necessary works to extend the Mediterranean Corridor to Alicante. This demand is part of a parliamentary initiative led by the GPP Infrastructure Spokesperson in Les Corts, Joserra González de Zárate, following Adif's cancellation of a key contract to implement security systems on the section between La Encina and Alicante's capital.

González de Zárate warned that 'to advance the connection of the Mediterranean Corridor with the Port of Alicante, all technical elements must be coordinated'. In this case, the third rail works have already been awarded, but the lack of an updated and tendered project for communication, blocking, and security systems could cause unnecessary delays.

The new route cannot be operational without these systems, which, according to the popular spokesperson, demonstrates 'alarming disorganisation by the Ministry of Transport led by Óscar Puente'. The GPP warns that this situation jeopardises the connection of the Port of Alicante with the Mediterranean Corridor, affecting freight transport, commuter services, medium distance, and the future regional AVE.

González de Zárate stated that 'we are facing an essential infrastructure for territorial cohesion and economic competitiveness, which cannot be stalled by the central government's inaction'. However, this situation is not isolated, as the Mediterranean Corridor has already accumulated more than five years of delay compared to initial forecasts.

For all these reasons, the GPP has submitted a Non-Legislative Proposal in Les Corts to urge Sánchez's government to urgently draft, tender, and execute the security installations project and adapt the railway route to mixed gauge and new trains. 'The Valencian Community cannot keep waiting. It's time to move from words to action,' concluded González de Zárate.
