The driving licence points system is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary. This concept was introduced into legislation with Law 17/2005 and was an initiative born for its "highly re-educational nature". The system is simple: each driver starts with 12 points, except for new drivers and those who have regained their licence after losing it, who have eight. For each offence, the corresponding points are deducted from this total.

Over time, drivers can reach a maximum balance of 15 points, as the Directorate-General for Traffic rewards good drivers. If no offence resulting in point loss is committed within three years, two points are added. If another three years pass under the same conditions, an additional point is added, reaching the maximum score.

Now, Spanish drivers can benefit from a new measure that will allow them to improve their driving record easily thanks to an initiative launched by the DGT. The organisation takes a step further and has announced a new measure that will allow drivers to increase their points on the driving licence in a simple way.

From this Wednesday, March 26, those who complete a safe and efficient driving course can earn up to two additional points, with a maximum limit of 15 points on the licence. The courses will be aimed at both car and motorcycle and moped drivers, and their goal will be to improve reaction capacity in dangerous situations, as well as to promote safer and more responsible driving habits. For motorcyclists, the training will be divided into two categories: urban environments and conventional roads.

With a minimum duration of six hours, the training will combine a theoretical part, of at least one hour and 45 minutes, with practical exercises both in closed circuits and on open roads. The courses can be taken every two years, allowing drivers to accumulate additional points progressively, always respecting the maximum limit of 15.

The courses are regulated in an order published on March 6 in the Official State Gazette (BOE). To access them, drivers must enrol in centres approved by the DGT, which will be distributed across different provinces to facilitate access for all interested parties. Although prices have not yet been detailed, they are expected to be affordable to encourage widespread participation.

According to Traffic data, in 2023, 1.1 million penalties were imposed on drivers and 4.2 million points were deducted, according to Traffic data. Last year, 42,000 drivers had to recover their licence and 35,286 took courses to regain some of their points.
