IVECO has delivered two heavy-duty IVECO S-eWay hydrogen fuel cell trucks to BMW, a partner in the H2Haul project. This European initiative, co-financed by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, aims to demonstrate the high reliability of hydrogen-powered trucks as a viable zero-emission solution for Europe's transport needs through operational field tests in various missions, real-world situations, in collaboration with several hydrogen suppliers and across diverse geographical ecosystems.

This milestone underscores IVECO's commitment to advancing sustainable mobility and shaping the future of zero-emission logistics in Europe.

The delivery took place during a special event organized by BMW in Leipzig, showcasing the holistic use of hydrogen throughout BMW's value chain, from logistics to the finished vehicle for long-distance transport.

This significant occasion also marked the opening of two state-of-the-art hydrogen refueling stations by TEAL Mobility in Leipzig and Hormersdorf, a key step in establishing the necessary infrastructure for H2 logistics and commercial transport.

The IVECO S-eWay hydrogen fuel cell truck boasts a range of up to 800 km, a quick refueling time of under 20 minutes, and a capacity for 70 kg of compressed H2 at 700 bar pressure. With its high mileage and payload capacity, it is expected to be a game-changer in long-haul missions with zero exhaust emissions. The trucks will transport parts between Bavaria (Nuremberg) and Leipzig (BMW plant), supported by two new hydrogen refueling stations.

IVECO's participation in the H2Haul project is part of its multi-energy approach to decarbonization, focusing on developing various alternative powertrains to offer customers the solution that best fits their specific operational needs, with hydrogen representing a key element in decarbonizing hard-to-abate missions.

While monitoring the progress of the technological landscape and the evolution of the regulatory framework, the brand continues to contribute to the development of the hydrogen ecosystem for heavy-duty applications by researching all promising vehicle technologies and architectures, such as the IVECO S-Way prototype featuring an FPT Industrial XCURSOR 13-litre hydrogen internal combustion engine and the series hybrid heavy-duty concept truck incorporating an FPT Industrial CURSOR 9 hydrogen range extender system, both presented at IAA 2024.

A showcase of hydrogen excellence

The two IVECO S-eWay hydrogen fuel cell trucks delivered today are part of a fleet of 12 hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles that IVECO is deploying in strategic locations across Europe (Germany, France, and Switzerland) as part of the H2Haul project to demonstrate the future viability of hydrogen fuel cell trucks. One of the trucks was displayed at TEAL Mobility's new hydrogen station, showcasing hydrogen refueling operations, while the second was exhibited at BMW's Leipzig plant.

The event, organized by BMW, brought together representatives from project partners, funding institutions, and public officials, including delegates from the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport. It began with presentations on BMW's holistic hydrogen framework, demonstrating how hydrogen is being integrated throughout the company's value chain, from production to long-distance transport, followed by in-depth reflections on the project and its crucial role in accelerating the scalability of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the future of transport.

Attendees were then invited to the inauguration ceremony of the TEAL Mobility hydrogen station, located near BMW's Leipzig plant, where an IVECO S-eWay hydrogen fuel cell truck demonstrated a hydrogen refueling operation. An IVECO BUS E-WAY, already operating within BMW's facilities for zero-emission shuttle service, was used to transport attendees between the BMW plant and the new station.

This demonstration of hydrogen technology highlights the collective commitment of industry leaders to decarbonizing logistics and accelerating the adoption of hydrogen-powered mobility for long-distance transport and demanding missions, marking an important milestone on the path to decarbonizing the sector.
