Elche's Independent Film Festival, organised by the Fundación Mediterráneo, is set to celebrate its 48th edition from 11th to 18th July at Hort del Xocolater and Los Arenales beach. The festival, the oldest in the region, will distribute €15,500 in prizes across its various sections.

New awards are introduced in this edition to take "a step further" in the commitment to independent cinema. Among them are prizes recognising excellence in direction, acting, and screenplay.

The president of the Fundación Mediterráneo, Luis Boyer, highlighted that the new categories of the Elche Independent Film Festival reflect "our commitment to valuing all aspects that make a quality film possible, from conception to execution."

In this regard, the festival aims, beyond celebrating cinematic creativity, to serve as a "connection between the Foundation and the city of Elche," through a relationship that "strengthens culture and art for the benefit of society," Boyer emphasised. Therefore, the innovations allow for the continued "strengthening of this Festival as a cultural and creative reference at national and international levels."

The submission period for entries will open this Friday, 10th January, and will remain open until 15th March 2025 via the official website. This edition "reaffirms the Festival's commitment to promoting short and independent films, highlighting its focus on recognising fiction, documentary, and animation short films."

Additionally, the Elche Independent Film Festival qualifies for the Goya Awards for Best Short Film in the Fiction and Documentary categories. The festival, organised by the Fundación Mediterráneo, is supported by the Elche City Council and the Luis Buñuel Film Club of Elche.

The coordinator of the Elche Film Festival, Alejandro Cano, noted that "the incorporation of these new awards is a recognition of the effort and talent of filmmakers at all levels of production. Our goal is to continue evolving and to make the Festival an increasingly comprehensive platform for cinema, creating a space where the diverse voices of the seventh art can be heard and celebrated."

Among the improvements introduced this year is the promotion of the 'Fes Curt' category, which has seen its prize fund increased to €1,500. This award gives visibility to filmmakers born or residing in the Valencian Community, reflecting the Festival's commitment to the closest cinematic creation.

Entries to the competition

The short films must meet the requirements specified in the rules, such as a maximum duration of 30 minutes and production after 1st January 2023. Entries will be made exclusively through the Movibeta and Festhome platforms until 23:59:59 on 15th March 2025. The Fundación Mediterráneo will announce the Official Section from 19th May 2025.

The selected short films will be screened from 11th to 17th July, culminating with the Closing Gala and awards ceremony on 18th July.

A Selection Jury will choose from all the works submitted to the competition those deemed most qualified to be part of the various Official Sections of the Festival, and their decision will be announced around 19th May. The Qualification Jury, composed of different personalities from the world of cinema and communication, will announce its verdict at the closing ceremony of the festival on Friday, 18th July 2025.
