It was one of the Wimbledons with the poorest Spanish participation at the start of the tournament, but the narrative has quickly changed. With Jessica Bouzas, Alejandro Davidovich, Pedro Martínez, and Jaume Munar advancing to the third round, joining Carlos Alcaraz and Cristina Bucsa, Spanish tennis records the highest number of participants at this stage since 2013.
Davidovich faced the least resistance in securing his ticket to a round that has been his limit in this tournament. The player from Malaga saw his match against Botic Van de Zandschulp suspended on Wednesday due to lack of light at 5-5 in the fourth set, and he masterfully concluded it the next day, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, and 7-6 (5).
Despite serving for the win and squandering a match point on Wednesday, Davidovich returned with renewed energy and defeated the man who ended Rafa Nadal's career in the Davis Cup. He now faces a tough match against Taylor Fritz, who has won titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne on this grass tour, where he precisely defeated the Spaniard in the semifinals. Davidovich has never progressed beyond the third round here, making this a golden opportunity to delve deeper into a Grand Slam he won as a junior.
Joining Davidovich was Jaume Munar, with another convincing victory over Fabian Marozsan, 6-2, 6-3, and 7-5 (9). The Balearic player, however, needed eleven match points to overcome the Hungarian and advance, for the first time in his career, beyond the second round of a Grand Slam.
Completing the trio of Spaniards, Pedro Martínez overcame Mariano Navone (7-5, 7-5, and 7-6 (8)) in a competitive match that lasted over three hours despite being resolved in straight sets. The Valencian matches his best result here.
In the women's draw, Jessica Bouzas maintains her charm at Wimbledon and will at least repeat last year's third round. The Pontevedra native defeated Sofia Kenin 6-1, 7-6 (4) and will face Dayana Yastremska, the Ukrainian who surprised Coco Gauff in the first round.
Additionally, Novak Djokovic perhaps showed the best level of the tournament by defeating Dan Evans 6-3, 6-2, and 6-1. The Serbian, a seven-time champion here and finalist in the last six editions, stands as a favourite alongside Sinner and Alcaraz, who will return to competition this Friday against Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff.
The German, who earned his place in the third round by defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime, has lost the last three encounters against Alcaraz, one at Wimbledon 2022 and two in Madrid, but he won their first meeting four years ago at Roland Garros.
