Mercedes-Benz Vito celebrates three decades on roads worldwide, establishing itself as a true "multitasker" and a cornerstone in the star's van range.
Since that distant 1995, when the first generation came to light, the Vito has demonstrated unwavering versatility, adapting to the needs of trades, emergency services, couriers, and fleets of all kinds.
One of the most notable curiosities is the unbreakable link of the Vito with the Vitoria-Gasteiz plant, which gives it its name. From day one, all generations of this medium van have been manufactured in the Alava capital, making this factory the second largest producer of Mercedes-Benz vans globally and a nerve center for the company.
The Vitoria plant, with 4,800 employees and over 70 years of history, is already preparing an expansion to produce vans based on the VAN.EA electric architecture from 2026.
Long before electric mobility became a massive trend, the Vito was already paving the way. In 2010, Mercedes-Benz launched the Vito E-CELL, the first mass-produced van powered by batteries, with 95 HP and 130 km of range. This bold step was a success, especially in urban courier services. In 2018, the eVito took over, consolidating the commitment to zero direct emissions mobility in the medium segment. Currently, the Vito and eVito represent almost a quarter of Mercedes-Benz Vans sales, showing their market relevance.
Throughout its three generations, the Vito has significantly evolved in technology and safety. The first generation (1995) already stood out with a driver airbag and ABS. The second (2003) introduced rear-wheel drive and an unprecedented variety of variants, being voted "Van of the Year" again in 2005.
The third generation, launched in 2014, brought a new design, more space, and a higher payload. It was a pioneer in equipping standard airbags and seatbelt reminders for driver and passengers, and the crosswind assist. The 2020 update incorporated the efficient OM 654 diesel engines, the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, and the optional digital interior mirror.
The latest update, in 2024, has taken the Vito to a new level of connectivity and comfort. The MBUX multimedia system, the 10.25-inch touchscreen, and new safety features such as active brake assist with cross-traffic function and active lane-keeping assist, fully integrate it into the brand's digital ecosystem. Additionally, for the first time, a petrol engine with mild hybrid technology has been added, further diversifying its propulsion offering.
"The Vito has proven to be a true multitasker for professionals. It offers a high level of functionality and flexibility, combined with comfort and efficiency. Like our Sprinter, it has kept the world moving for 30 years," says Sagree Sardien, Head of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Vans. A legacy of three decades that the Vito celebrates more alive and ready than ever for future challenges.
