Former Uruguayan President José Mujica, a political icon for the Latin American left, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89. His death followed the spread of esophageal cancer throughout his body, after he acknowledged in January that he was nearing the end of his life.

"With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our comrade Pepe Mujica. President, activist, leader, and guide. We will miss you dearly, dear Old Man. Thank you for everything you gave us and for your profound love for your people," stated Uruguay's President, Yamandú Orsi.

In January, Mujica announced that he did not wish to continue treatment for his cancer and asked to be allowed to die in peace. "The warrior has the right to rest," he said in an interview, acknowledging that his cycle had ended "some time ago."
