On July 23, the Mossos d'Esquadra arrested two sisters, aged 49 and 44, for allegedly defrauding over half a million euros from an 85-year-old woman in Barcelona, whom they were caring for.

The total amount reached 524,000 euros, involving gradual money transfers abroad and funds taken for personal expenses, such as purchasing high-value items and undergoing cosmetic surgeries, the police reported in a statement on Tuesday.

The investigation began in June 2025 after the victim visited a bank to check her account balance and was informed that her account was empty.

After conducting several inquiries with the victim's family, investigators concluded that it all started in 2019 when the woman's fragile health led her to hire two caregivers.

Three years later, having built a close and trusting relationship, the victim, aiming to avoid worrying about banking matters, granted one of them power of attorney. This allowed the arrested caregiver to conduct unlimited banking transactions and sign public and private documents, as well as access cards and accounts.

Additionally, the suspects installed security cameras in the victim's home to monitor her movements. The arrested individuals, accused of embezzlement and document forgery, had no prior police records and appeared in court on July 25.
