This Sunday's respite has been nothing more than a brief pause before a new rise in mercury levels expected across almost the entire country. This Tuesday, warnings for high temperatures will be activated in eleven autonomous communities with peaks once again exceeding 40ºC in Córdoba and Badajoz, according to the forecast issued by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) on Monday.

Specifically, this Tuesday will see yellow or orange alerts for high temperatures activated in provinces of Andalusia, Aragon, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, the Community of Madrid, Navarre, La Rioja, and the Valencian Community. Notably, in the Cordoba countryside and Badajoz province, maximum temperatures could reach up to 42ºC.

Following last week's heatwave and the drop in temperatures this past Sunday in much of Spain, Aemet has warned of a new spell of intense heat with very high temperatures expected especially between Tuesday and Thursday. The rise in temperature is driven by a subtropical anticyclone centered over the Azores and low thermal pressures in the southwestern peninsula, according to Aemet spokesperson Jesús Riesco. "Temperatures will be warmer than usual in almost all of Spain, especially in the inland peninsula, coastal areas, and archipelagos. Only in the far north of the peninsula is cloudiness expected with a possibility of light and scattered precipitation towards the end of the week," Riesco notes.

ºC This Monday in the Southwest

This Monday comes with a preview where peaks of up to 40ºC are not ruled out in areas of the Guadiana Valley and Guadalquivir Valley. However, it is from Tuesday that a significant rise in mercury levels is expected. "Temperatures will generally increase this Tuesday except for some decreases in minimum temperatures along southeastern coasts and Menorca as well as the Cantabrian coast. Maximum temperatures will exceed 35ºC in much of the interior of the northern half and southern half of the peninsula, northeastern interior, northern plateau, and southern Galicia areas without ruling out southern and interior Canary Islands. Temperatures could surpass 40ºC in large areas of the southwestern quadrant of the peninsula," details Riesco.

According to Aemet, extreme temperatures on Tuesday are expected to reach up to 42ºC in Córdoba province, 41ºC in Badajoz, 40ºC in Huelva, Jaén, Seville, Ciudad Real, and Toledo; and 39ºC in Cáceres, Madrid, Ávila, Ourense, Cádiz, Granada, and Valencia.

For Wednesday, most of the country is expected to remain stable with clear skies. Only Galicia and the Cantabrian area will have a higher probability of cloudiness with possible light and scattered showers. A thermal rise is anticipated across most of the country but more pronounced in areas of Málaga and Cádiz. According to Riesco, "temperatures will exceed 35ºC in most of the interior southern half of the peninsula, northeastern interior, northern plateau areas, southern Galicia areas as well as southern and interior Canary Islands. Temperatures could likely reach 40ºC in large areas of the southwestern quadrant of the peninsula."
