34 years, more than 12,400 days. That is how long José Francisco Mayans served as the Chief of the Local Police in El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. Specifically, he held this position for about 21 of those years. Following a long career and tireless work, as recounted by the Town Hall itself, this Wednesday, August 28th, he bid farewell to his colleagues to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.
The police officers, along with Mayor Miguel Ángel García and Councilor for Security María José Ivars, prepared an emotional walk of honor to give him the tribute he deserves. They all wanted to say goodbye both professionally and personally. Afterwards, they headed to the town hall, where other municipal workers and the government team were waiting to celebrate a small institutional event.
Mayans received a plaque as a representation of his professionalism towards the residents in his commitment to safety and well-being. At this event in the town hall, some of his family members, friends, and Civil Protection members were also present. Additionally, it was his own sister Rosa who presented him with a gift, a mural crafted by Jesús Català.
The protagonist wanted to reminisce about his entry into "that small town hall team" with some heartfelt words. The now ex-Chief of the Local Police joined the force along with two other officers in 1990 when there was only one auxiliary for the entire municipality. "Things have changed a lot since then. Everything has evolved and we work differently," he highlighted, "but changes are always good if done with common sense."
In his thank-you speech, there was an important mention for the government team, especially the mayor and the Councilor for Security, "for making me feel so good and for giving me the support I have had these past years." He also thanked Social Services and Civil Protection; colleagues and Local Police Chiefs from neighboring towns; the 37 men and women who have been part of the Local Police force, and his family's "unconditional support": "to Cati, my children Loreto and Joan, my sister Rosa, and my parents, especially my mother María."
For his part, the mayor also delivered words of recognition and gratitude. Emotionally moved, he emphasized the "privilege" it has been for the municipality to have him first as an officer and then as chief because "the involvement has been maximum and vocational." Lastly, the councilor wished him a happy retirement and stated that "your human quality will always be an example to follow and your good work as a police officer will be a reference for future generations." Currently, the leadership is handed over to now-officer José Vicente García.
