Antonio García, the Alicante native who disappeared in Belgium on July 26, is now reunited with his family. "I am very excited and eager to return to Spain," he recounts. For over a month, no one knew anything about him until last Friday, August 30, when he appeared at a Belgian police station, from where they immediately notified his sister Luisa, who resides in the country and went to pick him up. "I survived thanks to a 24-hour store that at least gave me breakfast," he comments, still exhausted.
Two of his brothers traveled to Belgium on Saturday to reunite with him. "It has been a nightmare," his sisters comment. The family is currently "very happy to have finally seen him." Antonio García, having lost all his documentation, was forced to rely on the charity of people to survive, according to his account. "I spent my days on metro benches and my nights on park benches," he explains.
Antonio is eager to return to Alicante but must first resolve paperwork with the Spanish Consulate. In the coming days, he will travel to Spain accompanied by his relatives, except for Luisa, his sister, who resides in the country and has spent more than 30 days searching for Antonio on the streets of Bruges with her husband and daughter. "I left him at the airport on July 25 at 7 p.m. and never saw him again," she recounts.
Antonio is diabetic, but the lack of insulin does not seem to have affected him. "I have gone 35 days without taking it but, for now, I am fine and haven't needed to see a doctor," he clarifies. The only thing he feels is that "he struggles to breathe when he gets up" and that he "collapses into bed from exhaustion." While living on the streets, the police never stopped to ask him, as they thought he was homeless, according to his family. Fortunately, the family's ordeal has come to an end.
