In a video lasting just over five minutes, Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook and owner of Instagram and WhatsApp, dismantled the verification system on issues such as immigration and gender, among others. This marks Meta's shift in comment moderation on its platforms to "fight against censoring governments" and "defend freedom of expression."
A sober statement that has delivered one of the year's top stories, yet it hasn't gone unnoticed by fashion and luxury enthusiasts. For several years now, Zuckerberg has also made a 180-degree turn in his wardrobe. The flip-flops and hoodies that were once trendy at Facebook's headquarters in Palo Alto, California, have now been replaced by jeans and plain t-shirts. Occasionally, a pattern might appear.
However, the real change is on his wrists, specifically the left one. The man who created a tech empire to measure time is among the most analogue. Privacy or a taste for exclusivity?
In his jewellery box, as far as we know, Zuckerberg already holds a Patek Philippe ref. 5236P Perpetual Calendar, an F.P. Journe Chronomètre Souverain "Havana" in platinum, a Centigraphe Sport Aluminium, and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Kingsman Knife Watch. The latest addition to this collection is a Greubel Forsey "Hand Made 1."
This is the watch that the owner of Instagram and WhatsApp wears in the video of last Tuesday's announcement. A unique piece, only two or three are produced, with a price exceeding seven figures: more than a million euros. A precise, handmade machine with over 6,000 hours of craftsmanship. "It's a pleasure to see someone who has played such a fundamental role in shaping the modern digital landscape and lifestyle show a true appreciation for the more traditional approach of today's high watchmaking," remarked the father of Greubel Forsey after seeing the images of the magnate.
Zuckerberg, the third richest person in the world with a net worth of $214.7 billion, according to Forbes, has shown interest in collecting watches over the past year, sporting models from brands like Patek Philippe and FP Journe.
Neither Apple Watch, Garmin, nor Amazfit, Zuckerberg has developed a taste for traditional watches with their hands and precise mechanisms to tell the time. The first 'jewel' worn on his left wrist was a Richard Mille RM 30-01 at the wedding of Indian businessman Anant Ambanio. "Watches... are cool," Zuckerberg is heard saying in the video. Around 200,000 euros in titanium and 250,000 in gold and titanium.
A few months later, a new acquisition, a Patek Philippe, "a 5236P," confirmed the Facebook executive. A revealing crown with a Calatrava cross drew attention in the new acquisition, which ranged from 85,637 euros to 138,074.
His jewellery box also holds nearly 150,000 euros worth of the F.P. Journe Souveraine Chronomètre Souverain or the 96,000 of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Kingsman Knife Watch.
But none reach the million euros of the precise Greubel Forsey "Hand Made 1." A collection of watches that Zuckerberg sums up with this phrase: "I feel like I'm not doing my job if I waste some of my energy on silly or frivolous things in my life."
