A young man has reported a homophobic attack on social media that occurred in the heart of Alicante during the early hours of Sunday, June 29. According to his account, the attack took place around five in the morning on a street between the Rambla and the Castaños area, when a group of three young men began to harass him because of his appearance.

The victim himself recorded the incident with his mobile phone. In the video, which lasts only a few seconds, one of the attackers can be seen throwing a glass bottle that hits the young man in the face. The victim, identified as Daniel, suffered a nose injury.

The attack caused a deviation of his nasal septum, requiring medical attention. In response to the account of events, the hospital itself reported the attack ex officio.

"They just threw a bottle at me for being gay and dressed like this," he denounces in the post, which he accompanied with images of the injury. "So that later they say that gays do not suffer homophobia and that these are isolated cases," he writes, visibly affected, but also with a firm message of resistance.

Beyond recounting the events, Daniel wanted to send a message of support to other LGTBI people who have suffered similar situations. "I have confidence in myself. I know who I am and that I do not harm anyone. But there are many people who do not have that confidence. When they suffer a homophobic attack, they feel it is their fault, that they have to hide. And nothing could be further from the truth," he states.

In his post, he also remembers the victims of homophobic attacks who did not survive: "I share this for all the gays and LGTB people who could not make it home. For all those whose lives were taken just for being who they were."

The post ends with a declaration of principles: "I came to this life to enjoy, to love, and to be free. And I do not intend to stop being myself. Being gay is not the problem. Homophobia is."

Support from LGTBI Associations

The association Diversitat has firmly condemned this homophobic attack. In a statement, the entity denounced that such attacks are not isolated incidents but direct consequences of hate speech that, they claim, "are being normalized in society and fueled by the far-right and some regressive policies that have cut back the rights of the LGTBI+ community in the Valencian Community."

The president of Diversitat, Juan David Santiago, described the incident as "intolerable and deeply painful," and noted that attacks on LGTBI+ people are increasing in public spaces "under the cover of political discourses that legitimize violence." "When protection laws are dismantled and homophobia is whitewashed by institutions, these are the results," he stated.

The organization demands a strong condemnation from the authorities, the implementation of urgent protection measures, and the restoration of public policies that guarantee the safety and dignity of the community.

Additionally, it has shown its support for the young man attacked and his family, offering all its psychological and legal resources. Finally, it has called on the public not to remain indifferent and to actively defend the rights of all people. "Not one more attack. Not one step back," they conclude.
