Two Young People Dead and Three Injured as Car Plunges 200 Metres Down a Slope in Burgos

Two young individuals have died and three others were injured following a severe traffic accident in Espinosa de los Monteros, Burgos province, on the BU-570.

This weekend has seen up to four accidents on the province's roads, but tragically, this Sunday, three people have already died on Burgos roads. In Villasana de Mena, an 81-year-old man died after his car collided with a wall.

The Castilla y León 1-1-2 Emergency Centre received a call at around 16:17 hours alerting of an accident, a road departure, at kilometre 10 of the BU-570, in the area of Espinosa de los Monteros. Just three kilometres from the spot where, 11 days ago on May 21, a motorcyclist died.

The car veered off the road and fell approximately 200 metres down a slope, eventually overturning. Five young people were travelling inside. The call reported that four of them were trapped.

The 1-1-2 control room alerted the Traffic Civil Guard, the Burgos Fire Brigade, and those from Miranda de Ebro, as well as Medina de Pomar and Sacyl health emergencies. A mobile ICU, two ambulances, and the medical team from the Espinosa de los Monteros health centre, plus a medical helicopter, were dispatched to the scene.

As the vehicle overturned in a hard-to-reach area, the Emergency Coordination Centre was notified, which mobilised the Junta's rescue helicopter with two rescuers, one of whom was a nurse.

When the medical and emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they could only confirm the death of two of the car's occupants. Additionally, they attended to three others. One was airlifted to the University Hospital of Burgos (HUBU) by medical helicopter. The other two injured were taken by mobile ICU and basic life support ambulance to the University Hospital of Cruces in Vizcaya.

The firefighters confirmed they had to intervene to extricate the car's occupants. The Rescue Group personnel also provided support to the agencies on site.
