La Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) has issued a yellow alert for the early hours of Wednesday, January 16, due to minimum temperatures in the interior of Alicante province. The polar air mass that has entered the peninsula this week has brought sub-zero temperatures to municipalities like Villena, which has reached -7 ºC, according to data from the Valencian Meteorological Agency (Avamet).
The Alicante coast will not escape the cold either, with temperatures significantly lower than usual. For instance, Aemet forecasts minimums of 3 ºC in the provincial capital and six in Dénia. Meanwhile, maximum temperatures will rise in the north of the region and remain stable in other areas. Moreover, moderate widespread frosts are expected in the interior and locally weak frosts in coastal areas. The wind will be light from the west.
"Light wind, cold air, and clear skies during the time of year when nights are longest, means frosts in the interior," explain the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
Aemet warns that from midday Thursday, the westerly wind blowing these days will shift to the north and northeast, which could lead to 'heavy' rainfall in the most exposed areas, such as the southern coast of Valencia and the northern coast of Alicante.
Additionally, they indicate that snow could fall in the coastal mountains of these areas where precipitation is expected. The snow level will be around 900-1100 meters, with the possibility of descending locally to 600-700 meters in northern Alicante on Thursday evening.
