All eyes were indeed on Volodymyr Zelenski's visit to Donald Trump. The global press was keenly observing, broadcasting live what is usually a staged performance from the Oval Office before the real exchange of opinions begins behind closed doors. This Friday, however, drama unfolded, prompting swift reactions from key world leaders, particularly in Europe.
Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, expressed his support for his Ukrainian counterpart. "Ukraine, Spain stands with you," wrote the Spanish leader in a message on the social network X. Sánchez also shared the same phrase in English and Ukrainian.
Alberto Núñez Feijoo echoed similar sentiments: "What happened at the White House is bad news for the world. It only benefits the aggressor. Ukraine deserves to be heard and supported for a just peace."
French President Emmanuel Macron and Donald Tusk also defended Zelenski. Macron stated, "We must respect those who have fought from the beginning." He added, "Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine is the victim," in response to Trump's comments accusing Zelenski of "playing with the possibility of a third world war."
Polish leader Donald Tusk, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the European Council, also sent a message of support to Kyiv. "Dear Zelenski, dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone," he wrote on his personal X account, formerly Twitter.
Donald Tusk assures Volodymyr Zelenski and his compatriots that "they are not alone." "Dear @ZelenskyyUa, dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone," affirmed Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in a message posted on X shortly after the stormy meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenski, and the latter's departure from the White House.
On the other side, the Russians: Kirill Dmitriev, an advisor to Vladimir Putin, described the exchange between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenski as "historic." Dmitriev is the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and attended the recent talks between the United States and Russia in Saudi Arabia.
Within the United States, critical voices against Trump have also emerged. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer says Trump is "doing Putin's dirty work." The New York Democrat also vowed that his party "will never stop fighting for freedom and democracy."
Aligned with the American Democrats, influential Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy wrote on X: "What a shame for America. This whole scene is sad."
