The Austrian manufacturer KTM, renowned for its dominance in the European motorcycle market, has declared insolvency after months of austerity measures failed to reverse its financial crisis.

This situation not only affects the company itself but also the brands Husqvarna, Gas Gas, and MV Agusta, which are under its ownership and now face an uncertain future. The company is seeking to reorganize with the aim of reaching agreements with its creditors, to whom it owes 250 million euros.

Sources close to the process, cited by the media outlet DerStandard, detail that KTM has requested a 90-day period to plan a restructuring with key creditors. The financial problems stemmed from overproduction of motorcycles and bicycles, coupled with excess inventory, rapid dealership expansion, quality failures, and questionable investment decisions.

Multimillion Losses

The latest financial report shows a 21% drop in sales during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period the previous year. Instead of the 127 million euros in profits recorded in 2023, KTM reported losses of 181 million euros, which has driven its accumulated debt to alarming levels. This situation puts the company on the brink of bankruptcy if it fails to refinance its long-term debt.

For now, KTM does not plan layoffs among its 6,000 employees, although the future of the workers depends on both internal decisions and the judicial resolution of the restructuring process. The goal is to avoid a total collapse and maintain business operations despite current difficulties.

The continuity of the company and its associated brands now depends on securing sufficient financing to avoid default. If they fail in this attempt, definitive bankruptcy could be inevitable, severely impacting one of the most iconic manufacturers in the European motorcycle industry.
