Months ago, the Italian Jannik Sinner saved a 'matchpoint' after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) dismissed the positive result during the Indian Wells tournament for Clostebol, a substance banned in tennis, after two appeals. Now, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has appealed the decision and has taken this resolution to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In a statement released this Saturday, WADA considers that the ITIA's conclusion that there was «no fault or negligence» was incorrect according to the applicable rules. Therefore, the body that ensures integrity in the world of sports is requesting a sanction for the Italian between one and two years.

However, this authority does not request «the disqualification of any result except for what has already been imposed by the first instance court».

The Italian tennis player, considered one of the new stars in the world of rackets, tested positive for Clostebol in two medical examinations in mid-March during the Indian Wells tournament.

After a lengthy investigation carried out by an independent tribunal of the International Tennis Integrity Agency, the Italian was acquitted after demonstrating, according to the ruling, that the banned substance came from treatment his physiotherapist was applying to heal a wound on one of his fingers. The ITIA declared Sinner innocent and classified the case as an «accident,» and the punishment remained, to the surprise of his fellow players, a loss of points and prize money obtained at Indian Wells.

Now a month after that decision, WADA reopens the case days after Sinner won the US Open at the beginning of September.
