The Provincial Court of León has sentenced a woman who poisoned her former partner and father of her two children with rat poison. The incident occurred in 2020 when León Hospital acted on its own to report the injuries suffered by a patient to the court.

The couple had a romantic relationship and lived together, resulting in the birth of two children in 2013 and 2017. They agreed on the mother's custody and visitation rights, which later changed by court order.

The relationship between them became strained due to visits to the children, and disagreements during exchanges were frequent.

Proven Facts

On June 22, 2020, the woman, intending to end the man's life, applied an undetermined substance with a lethal dose of rat poison to a Milka chocolate bar, which she gave to her 7-year-old son. She instructed him not to eat it under any circumstances but to give it to his father and persuade him to consume it. The child complied.

The father picked up his children and, at the child's insistence, ended up eating the chocolate offered to him while they were leaving. That same day, he felt unwell with stomach pain and tingling in his hands. His health worsened two days later during one of the children's birthday parties. In the afternoon, he went to the hospital due to plantar pain in his hands and feet, skin lesions, and muscular and abdominal weakness, which required hospitalization.

During those days, he received treatment without improvement, necessitating his transfer to Caulee. At that time, skin lesions persisted, and he exhibited encephalopathy and poor coordination of feet and hands. He was admitted to the ICU with respiratory failure and was intubated with mechanical ventilation. Visual disturbances, muscle weakness, alopecia, and other skin wounds then developed.

According to Leonoticias, tests revealed rat poison levels in urine and blood considered acute intoxication, exceeding the permissible threshold in the human body and potentially causing death. He required two more ICU admissions in October and December.

The clinical condition was extremely severe, with reports stating that his death was prevented by the doctors' efforts and his prior good health and physical condition.

Consequently, the woman is sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison, disqualified from parental rights during the sentence, and must maintain a distance of 22 years from her victim.
