Woman Dies in Hiking Accident in Toledo

On Thursday afternoon, a woman tragically lost her life while hiking in Robledo del Mazo, Toledo. She was part of a group of hikers enjoying a public holiday. The incident took place at the Garganta de Las Lanchas, in the area known as "Las Chorreras" near the hamlet of Las Hunfrías.

The Civil Guard has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding her death. The woman fell from a waterfall from a height of five metres and was pulled from the water by her fellow hikers. Unfortunately, she had already passed away, and the efforts of the medical teams dispatched to the scene, including a medical helicopter and a medical team from La Nava de Ricomalillo, Toledo, were in vain as they could only confirm her death.

The area where the accident occurred is popular among hikers, especially in recent weeks following the heavy rains in March that have filled the landscape with water, creating several waterfalls. "Las Chorreras" of Las Hunfrías also attract tourists with the ruins of 16th-century mills and forests of oaks, holm oaks, pines, chestnuts, and shrubs like rockroses, which give the region its name. It is a micro-reserve located near the Gévalo River and protected by environmental regulations due to its oceanic and subtropical plant species. In fact, its vegetation represents the last remnants of laurel forests – subtropical forests – that covered the Iberian Peninsula 300 million years ago.

This natural beauty spot claimed the life of a woman on Thursday. Coincidentally, four years ago, another woman, aged 56, had to be rescued in the same location after slipping and falling into the waterfall. On that occasion, the woman, who was also hiking with three others, was more fortunate as she was rescued alive after being knocked unconscious by the severe impact of the fall.
