Universities in the province of Alicante have raised the white flag as a sign of peace. The agreements reached this Monday, which have resolved the controversy over the Medicine studies at UA, have calmed the waters between the two campuses.
This will be reflected on Friday, January 17, during the inauguration and formal swearing-in of the University of Alicante's rector, Amparo Navarro, which is expected to be attended by the rector of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, Juan José Ruiz.
The academic leader from Elche ended the battle against the implementation of the Medicine degree at the University of Alicante by abandoning the idea of filing a cassation appeal in the Supreme Court against the TSJ ruling that supports the decree authorizing studies at the San Vicente campus.
Also, sharing practices in public hospitals from the next academic year. After Ruiz's refusals to authorize the clinical centers already agreed with Elche to UA, the message changed after the three-way meeting with the president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón.
The agreement reached involves converting the 27 public hospitals in the Valencian Community into university hospitals, which students from all Valencian public universities will be able to access. Not only for Medicine but for any health discipline. A pact that also includes the implementation of Nursing at UMH.

Thus, with all differences smoothed over between both campuses, the image of this second inauguration of Amparo Navarro will be historic. While her first was marked by the pandemic and required a simple ceremony, this new occasion is expected to be attended by nearly 600 people, including the notable presence of the UMH rector.
Among other academic leaders, the president of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities, CRUE, and rector of the Universitat Jaume I of Castellón, Eva Alcón; the rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela, Antonio López; the rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján; the rector of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, José Capilla, the rector of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, Juan José Ruiz, and the rector of the European University of Valencia, Rosa Sanchidrián, will also attend. Additionally, the president of the UA Social Council, Adolfo Utor.
The UA rector, Amparo Navarro, confirmed a few weeks ago the presence of the president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, at her formal inauguration ceremony. The head of the Consell will share the stage with the Minister of Culture, Education, Universities, and Employment, José Antonio Rovira, and the Minister of Science, Innovation, and Universities, Diana Morant.
This image will also be historic, following recent events. It was last September, during the opening ceremony of the UA academic year, when the controversy over Medicine was very present. On that occasion, Rovira and Morant attended, missing the presence of Mazón. Also at the UMH event, which the minister did not attend either.

This Friday, both institutions, the Government of Spain and the Valencian Generalitat, will highlight the peace achieved between the universities; while it is expected that differences will continue among leaders and parties, especially during the speeches.
However, before them, it will be Minister Rovira who will intervene to read the Decree of appointment of the rector, the last re-elected in the history of UA, and thereafter, Navarro will appoint and take the oaths of her entire team for this new term.
