Which Cars Must Undergo Their First MOT This Year

A partir de enero de 2025, los turismos matriculados en 2021, cuyas matrículas corresponden a las letras LMC y LVV, deberán someterse a su primera ITV. Como todos los vehículos, los turismos tienen la obligación de pasar la inspección para asegurar que se encuentren en condiciones óptimas para circular de manera segura y cumplir con los estándares medioambientales establecidos.

From January 2025, cars registered in 2021, with license plates LMC and LVV, will need to undergo their first MOT. Like all vehicles, cars are required to pass the inspection to ensure they are in optimal condition for safe driving and meet established environmental standards.

Teniendo en cuenta factores como la edad y la tipología del vehículo, la frecuencia con la que deben pasar la ITV es distinta. En el caso de los turismos, han de acudir por primera vez a la inspección técnica a los cuatro años desde su fecha de matriculación. Desde los 4 hasta los 10 años, la inspección técnica ha de realizarse de forma bienal, y a partir de esta fecha, de forma anual. Esta frecuencia es obligatoria incluso cuando no utilizas el vehículo.

Considering factors such as the age and type of vehicle, the frequency of MOTs varies. For cars, the first technical inspection is required four years after registration. From four to ten years, the inspection must be biennial, and annually thereafter. This frequency is mandatory even if the vehicle is not in use.

Antes de acudir a la estación ITV, es recomendable realizar una revisión exhaustiva de tu vehículo. Algunos de los aspectos a verificar son los sistemas de iluminación: faros, intermitentes, luces de freno, etc. Deben funcionar correctamente y tener la intensidad adecuada.

Before heading to the MOT station, it is advisable to conduct a thorough check of your vehicle. Some aspects to verify include lighting systems: headlights, indicators, brake lights, etc. They must function correctly and have the appropriate intensity.

Verifica también el estado de los neumáticos, la profundidad del dibujo y la presión. Los frenos deben responder de manera eficaz y no presentar ruidos extraños. Comprueba que no haya holguras ni ruidos en la suspensión, y asegúrate de que el vehículo no emita humos excesivos ni olores extraños.

Also check the condition of the tyres, tread depth, and pressure. Brakes should respond effectively and not make unusual noises. Ensure there are no looseness or noises in the suspension, and make sure the vehicle does not emit excessive smoke or strange odours.

Revisa la carrocería en busca de óxido, abolladuras u otros daños que puedan afectar a la seguridad, y presta atención a los cristales, que deben estar limpios y sin rajas.

Inspect the bodywork for rust, dents, or other damage that could affect safety, and pay attention to the windows, which should be clean and free of cracks.

La Asociación de Entidades para la Inspección Técnica de Vehículos de la Comunidad de Madrid, AEMA-ITV recuerda que la ITV es una medida crucial para la seguridad vial. Según el estudio realizado por la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, a nivel nacional, gracias a la inspección técnica se salvan al año 723 muertes, 13.100 personas heridas y se evitan, al menos, 15.641 siniestros viales. La ITV es clave para reducir los riesgos en las vías públicas, ya que detecta fallos mecánicos o de seguridad antes de que puedan provocar un siniestro vial. Si todos los vehículos que no pasan la ITV obligatoria lo hicieran, se podrían salvar adicionalmente 353 vidas al año.

The Association of Entities for Vehicle Technical Inspection of the Community of Madrid, AEMA-ITV, reminds that the MOT is a crucial measure for road safety. According to a study by the Carlos III University of Madrid, nationally, the technical inspection saves 723 lives annually, prevents 13,100 injuries, and avoids at least 15,641 road accidents. The MOT is key to reducing risks on public roads, as it detects mechanical or safety failures before they can cause a road accident. If all vehicles that fail the mandatory MOT were to pass, an additional 353 lives could be saved each year.

Cabe recordar que presentarse a la ITV antes de tiempo está permitido y es recomendable hacerlo. La normativa prohíbe retrasarla, pero sí permite realizarla hasta 30 días antes sin perder días de caducidad para la próxima inspección. Es decir, si la fecha para presentarse a la ITV es el 25 de enero, pero se acude dos semanas antes, la siguiente vez se mantendrá para el 25 de enero del año correspondiente.

It is worth noting that attending the MOT early is allowed and recommended. The regulations prohibit delaying it, but allow it to be done up to 30 days in advance without losing expiry days for the next inspection. For instance, if the MOT date is January 25th, but you attend two weeks earlier, the next date will remain January 25th of the corresponding year.
