Just a moment of distraction at the wheel can lead to a traffic accident. A car that has suffered damage not only loses part of its value but can also compromise the driver's safety. However, certain vehicles are more prone to accidents than others.
An annual study by automotive data company carVertical has revealed which car brands are most involved in accidents in Spain. Among all the cars checked in 2024, BMW models recorded the highest rate of damage records, with 77.7% showing damage in their history. Following BMW were Porsche (69.1%), Volvo (51.4%), Audi (48.7%), and Volkswagen (47.6%). Therefore, drivers interested in these brands should be particularly cautious and inquire with the seller about any past damages and repairs. Without thorough checks, these models could become costly headaches for new owners.
Damage histories can reduce a car's residual value, making it harder to resell in the future. Additionally, cheap or inadequate repairs can increase long-term maintenance costs. If the vehicle has suffered structural damage or airbags have been deployed, its safety could also be compromised.
"Often, a car is damaged in one country, repaired at a very low cost, and then sold in another. Many vehicles involved in serious accidents are imported to Europe from the United States. Even within the country, vehicles tend to have accidents every 5-10 years. Given that the average age of cars checked in Spain is 8.5 years, it is likely these vehicles have been in an accident at least once," says Matas Buzelis, an automotive expert and head of communications at carVertical.
Compact urban cars are the least accident-prone in Spain, with Toyota (17.9% of vehicles reviewed), Peugeot (18.4%), and Fiat (15%) being the brands with the fewest damage records.
The cost of repairing a damaged vehicle largely depends on the brand. Economical class cars are cheaper to repair, so their repair costs are naturally lower. However, even a minor accident involving a luxury SUV can result in repair bills of thousands of euros.
In Spain, the average repair cost for Porsche vehicles was 8,553 euros, the highest among all brands analyzed by carVertical. Porsche was followed by BMW (6,215 euros) and Nissan (5,438 euros). According to the research, BMWs had an average of 2.1 accidents, Porsches 2, and Nissans 1.4. Skoda (1,746 euros), Citroën (1,856 euros), and Fiat (2,796 euros) had the lowest average repair costs in the study.
"Car buyers often dream of a specific model and try to save money by choosing a previously damaged vehicle. Not all damage records mean a car should be avoided, but it is always advisable to consult a mechanic if damage records appear in the history report," advises Buzelis.
