The President of the Alicante Provincial Council, Toni Pérez, visited the new Earthquake Museum in Almoradí this Tuesday. This exhibition space commemorates the earthquake that devastated various municipalities in the Vega Baja region in 1829, with its inauguration scheduled for this Friday.
The provincial institution has invested 216,000 euros in the rehabilitation of the house that hosts it, through the Aid Plan for the Rehabilitation of Municipal Historical Architectural Heritage.
It is a house located on La Reina Street in the town, over a century old. It is one of the few remaining from the post-earthquake reconstruction. The work has consolidated the building, preserving its layout and elements from the era, ensuring its conservation, as explained by the Provincial Council in a statement.
President Toni Pérez participated in the immersive experience offered by the museum, "reliving the impact of the earthquake that occurred on the afternoon of March 21, 1829, on the lives of the inhabitants of Almoradí and other affected municipalities such as Benejúzar or Torrevieja." He was accompanied by the Mayor of Almoradí, María Gómez, and the Vice President of the Provincial Council, Ana Serna.
"This centre highlights the reconstruction of the towns most affected by that terrible earthquake, while also fostering a sense of collective pride for having a history that shaped the future of the territory," Pérez pointed out, adding that "it will become a focal point for attracting visitors."
The new exhibition space, which offers audiovisuals and interactive recreations, also has an educational character and aims to pay tribute to Jose Luis Larramendi, an engineer and "key figure" in the reconstruction of Almoradí.
"This museum combines memory, heritage, history, and technology in a very attractive way," Pérez indicated, highlighting the "resilience" and "capacity for reconstruction and resurgence" of Almoradí, "a municipality that contributes so much to the province of Alicante."
