According to the forecast by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the worst driving conditions will occur in the provinces of León, Palencia, Burgos, Soria, and Zamora (Sanabria) in the coming days, where both snow and freezing rain are expected.

Also known as freezing rain, it is a rather peculiar and dangerous meteorological phenomenon. It occurs when raindrops, upon contact with a surface whose temperature is below 0°C, freeze instantly, forming a transparent and very slippery layer of ice.

For freezing rain to occur, a series of specific atmospheric conditions are needed, such as a layer of warm air at altitude. Raindrops form in the upper layers of the atmosphere, where the temperature is above 0°C.

Additionally, a layer of cold air near the ground is necessary. As the raindrops descend, they pass through a layer of cold air near the Earth's surface but do not freeze immediately.

Upon contact with a surface whose temperature is below 0°C, the raindrops freeze instantly, forming a transparent and very slippery layer of ice.

Freezing rain can cause numerous problems and dangers, both for people and property. Roads and pavements covered with ice become extremely slippery, increasing the risk of falls and traffic accidents. The layer of ice that forms on the asphalt drastically reduces the grip of tyres, significantly increasing the risk of traffic accidents. In the event of heavy snow or frost, it is advisable to use chains or snow tyres.

Freezing rain can cover traffic signs and make the road more difficult to see, limiting drivers' visibility. In extreme cases, it can cause damage to the asphalt and other road infrastructures.

Moreover, ice can damage crops, power lines, and other types of infrastructure. In extreme cases, snowfalls accompanied by freezing rain can isolate entire towns.

Therefore, if frost is expected, it is advisable to avoid driving or to do so with great caution, reducing speed and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.
