The province of Alicante is currently experiencing a heatwave due to a mass of warm air from Africa, expected to last at least until the beginning of next week. Alicante is experiencing the hottest May days since 1950, when records began, according to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
This phenomenon affects all of Spain. Aemet has issued the first orange warning -significant risk- for high temperatures this year in Seville, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Another 13 provinces are under yellow alert across the country.
Meanwhile, the Valencian Government's Health Department has also activated warnings for high temperatures, affecting several municipalities in the province of Alicante, specifically in the regions of La Marina Alta and El Comtat.
In the region of La Marina Alta, the municipalities of Els Poblets, Ondara, El Verger, Beniarbeig, Benimeli, Sanet y Negrals, Benidoleig, Beniarbeig, Tormos, Sagra, and Ràfol d'Almúnia will be under yellow alert this Friday.
Meanwhile, in El Comtat, the same warning is active for the municipalities of l'Alqueria d'Asnar, Benimarfull, Alcosser, and Beniarrés.
The rest of the province is at green level with no risk from high temperatures.
Additionally, the Health Department also indicates which municipalities will experience a tropical night, meaning minimum temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius. Such high minimums will occur in almost the entire province, with only the northern interior municipalities and some in Vega Baja being spared, according to the regional administration.
In this warmer phase of the episode, maximum temperatures are expected to generally reach 34 to 36 degrees in the interior of the province, while coastal areas will see temperatures reach 30 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead to next week, Monday will still be quite a hot day with maximums still reaching 34 to 36°C due to the arrival of warm westerly winds, creating a warm atmosphere.
