The province of Alicante will experience a sudden change in weather between this week and the next. Temperatures will rise this weekend, reaching almost spring-like values, as announced by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). However, the harshest winter will arrive from this Sunday with the entry of a mass of cold air from the interior of the European continent, which will cause thermometers to plummet for several days, in addition to bringing rain and snow to the Mediterranean coast.
"From Sunday, a mass of cold air will arrive, with a marked thermal drop. There will be widespread frosts, even near the coast. By midweek, rain could reach the Mediterranean area and snowfalls in the mountains of the East, without ruling it out at lower altitudes," according to the state agency.
The Aemet forecast indicates that an anticyclone located in northern Europe and extending towards the west of the peninsula will maintain stable weather and higher than normal temperatures until Saturday, with more than 20 degrees in the Mediterranean area.
We are having a warm start to the year, with a very warm peak between today and Saturday that will bring temperatures more typical of April than January.

However, the winter atmosphere will intensify from Sunday with the arrival of a mass of cold air moving from the European continent towards the peninsula. In fact, temperatures will drop moderately to significantly this Sunday, and nighttime frosts will extend and intensify, affecting the interior of the southeastern peninsula and the entire northern half except Galicia and the coasts.

These frosts will occur mainly at night and until shortly after dawn, spreading to much of the peninsula at least until Tuesday. Only areas near the coast will escape freezing. During the day, both Monday and Tuesday, less than 10 degrees are expected in much of the northern half and the interior of the southeast.
With this situation, it will snow below 700 to 800 meters in the northeastern peninsula on Sunday, a level that will remain in that area on Monday and will be around 1,000 meters in the southeast of the peninsula that day. On Tuesday and Wednesday, snowfalls are possible in the mountains of the north and east.
