Alicante and its province have experienced two consecutive days of rain, something almost unprecedented during the current hydrological year which began last October. This situation is expected to continue for the rest of the week, according to forecasts from the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

The Atlantic trough that has brought recent short and intense precipitation episodes will transform into a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) starting this Thursday, causing instability throughout the weekend.

Over the past 24 hours, significant amounts of rainfall have been recorded in various parts of the province of Alicante. The highest accumulated precipitation occurred in Alcoi, with 40.6 liters per square meter; Vila Joiosa recorded 37.4 liters, and Altea saw 29.8 liters. In Alicante city, 10.4 liters per square meter were measured as a result of short but intense rains that took place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Following the storms, temperatures have dropped significantly, although not as much in Alicante. The temperature settled at 21.8 ºC after the storm, the lowest at this observatory since August 16th.

From today, the low-pressure system will become isolated from the polar circulation and turn into a DANA, which will destabilize the northern third of the country where precipitation will begin from west to east and could accumulate significant amounts in some areas. Minimum temperatures will drop, and maximum temperatures will decrease in the southeast of the country.

AEMET has warned that the DANA will be located in the northwest of the peninsula on Friday, maintaining instability in the far north with potentially abundant precipitation accompanied by storms that could be strong. These rains are also likely, though weaker, in more southern areas. Additionally, temperatures will rise in the eastern half of the peninsula.

Although there is high uncertainty associated with DANAs, it is forecasted to move slowly eastward over the weekend. Thus, on Saturday, precipitation could affect the southeastern third of the peninsula. However, on Sunday, it will be limited to the northern third where it could be locally heavy, though weaker showers cannot be ruled out in parts of the east and in the Balearic Islands.
