The province of Alicante will transition within 24 hours from experiencing the warmest January 11th in its history to activating emergency protocols due to adverse weather conditions. The arrival of a mass of frigid air will cause temperatures to drop by up to ten degrees overnight, with minimum temperatures reaching zero degrees on the coast and below freezing inland.
This Saturday witnessed an exceptionally warm day, with an average temperature in the Valencian Community 6.6 degrees higher than the normal for January 11th, equivalent to that of April 26th, according to data from the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Across the region, it was the warmest January 11th since at least 1950.

From this Sunday, as the wind subsides, a significant drop in temperature is expected. Temperatures will shift from nearly 7 degrees above normal for January 12th to almost 3 degrees below normal on Monday and Tuesday, resulting in a cumulative drop of 10 degrees.
This weather episode is expected to last at least until Wednesday, although it could extend throughout the week. Aemet forecasts also indicate rain on Thursday and, especially, Friday. The snow level will be between 1,000 and 1,200 metres, which could lead to snowfalls in some of the province's mountains.
