Eleven Spanish provinces will be on alert for rain this Wednesday, according to the forecast by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), including the northern coast of Alicante province. In this area, accumulated rainfall of up to 20 liters per square meter is expected within an hour. The yellow alert will be active all morning until noon.
Aemet's forecast indicates the start of a period of instability on the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, marked by the interaction of an Atlantic low-pressure center and a cold air mass entering from the northeast. Thus, cloudy or overcast skies will prevail in the eastern half and Balearic Islands. By regions, showers are expected from early afternoon in Catalonia and coastal areas of the Valencian Community, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms. The worst affected areas will be Castellón and Tarragona provinces, with orange-level warnings.
Throughout the day, these showers are expected to spread to other inland areas of the central-eastern Peninsula and southeast. At the same time, they will decrease in Catalonia and coastal areas. Aemet has indicated that there is a possibility of heavy showers in the Valencian Community, southern Aragón and Catalonia, eastern Pyrenees, and eastern Castilla-La Mancha, especially in coastal areas of Castellón and southern Tarragona during the first half of the day, when they could become very heavy with significant accumulation.
Additionally, the state agency does not rule out isolated showers in other parts of the southeastern half during the afternoon. Showers are also likely in the Balearic Islands initially, where they could be locally heavy but are expected to subside.
Throughout the day, low cloud cover is expected in Cantabria with possible drizzle and predominantly clear skies in the northwestern quadrant. Meanwhile, in the Canary Islands, abundant cloud cover is forecast. Isolated showers may occur, more likely inland on mountainous islands in the afternoon.
Regarding temperatures, Aemet has forecast that maximum temperatures will tend to rise in Cantabria and the northwestern quadrant while decreasing across most of the Mediterranean slope, southern Atlantic regions, and archipelagos, notably in parts of the Valencian Community and Catalonia.
Minimum temperatures will drop in central-eastern and northeastern inland areas and rise in Ampurdán, mid Ebro valley, and extreme west. The provincial capitals recording the highest temperatures will be Badajoz, Córdoba, and Ourense with 32ºC; Seville with 31ºC; and Almería, Cáceres, Granada, Jaén, Pontevedra, and Toledo with 29ºC.
