The State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has issued an urgent communiqué indicating orange alerts for intense rains in the Aragón community, where water accumulations of more than 30 liters per square meter per hour can be expected. Teruel has yellow warnings for strong storms, and Albarracín, Jiloca, Gúdar, and Maestrazgo are at risk of hail.

Damage to a car after a flash flood or being submerged in water during a flood can vary widely, from breaks and dents to mechanical failures that depend significantly on the water level reached.

Initially, there is no need to worry too much if the water level reaches only halfway up the wheels. In this case, the car may still start, but it is likely that the catalytic converter will need to be replaced. If water has not entered the interior cabin, you are in luck.

If water has reached above the engine level, the first thing to do is resist the temptation to try starting the engine. You can turn on the ignition to check if the windows and lights work, ensuring that the electrical system is more or less intact. If all electrical components function, it is an excellent sign.

If water has entered through the engine's air intake and reached the cylinders, it can cause problems with a connecting rod. This failure is less likely in a gasoline engine than in a diesel because the ignition system usually fails first.

If water reaches a higher level, this mud can clog the radiator. If this happens, the engine could overheat. The solution is to clean the radiator from the outside.

If water enters the car's interior, upholstery, linings, and control switches will need to be replaced, as well as all insulators and fasteners associated with these elements.

Additionally, if internal body drains become clogged, water will oxidize the sheet metal and electrical connections may be affected since they are designed to withstand some moisture but not full immersion.

Although it is advisable to avoid travel during very intense rains as much as possible, if travel is necessary, ensure your phone is fully charged in case you need to call for help.

According to Fundación Mapfre, "if you encounter a flooded section of road ahead, it is advisable not to cross it no matter how shallow it seems; turn around and find an alternative route. If there is no other option and if the water barely covers the road, it is best to abandon the vehicle considering that there may be potholes."

What to Do if Your Vehicle Falls into Water

The most terrifying scenario is seeing your car fall into a deep body of water; at this moment you must prepare to evacuate. It is essential to stay calm, difficult as it may seem. Remember that the car will take minutes to submerge completely and there is time, although you must act quickly.

If it is still floating, immediately open the windows and try to exit by swimming towards safety. If the car has already partially sunk, water pressure may prevent you from opening the door; in this case, wait until the interior also floods.
