Volvo's iconic SUV undergoes a technological update both inside and out. This premium seven-seater stands out for its comfort, being one of the safest vehicles on the road. In its plug-in hybrid version, it is an exceptional electric vehicle with a backup plan, offering over 70 kilometres of fully electric range on a single charge in the WLTP test cycle. Consequently, this version's journeys are free from exhaust emissions.
The XC90 provides more power when needed: for longer trips, the hybrid engine combines with an efficient petrol engine to extend your range by over 800 km. You can also opt for the combined power of the petrol and electric engines for constant all-wheel drive or off-road driving.
A new, more contemporary exterior design enhances the confidence exuded by the XC90. It also showcases the ongoing transition towards full electrification, incorporating newer and fully electric elements. However, the most significant innovation lies within. A revamped interior improves functionality and integrates the latest user experience in the XC90, similar to the new electric vehicles EX90 and EX30. A larger central touchscreen with higher resolution enhances the user experience, opening up a world of new features, apps, and, of course, regular over-the-air software updates.
In addition to the new range of fully electric vehicles, the XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid remains a popular choice among the brand's customers and an important vehicle in terms of sales and profitability. Alongside fully electric models, plug-in hybrids like the XC90 and its siblings form a global, exciting, and balanced product portfolio for Volvo Cars, providing a solid bridge towards a fully electrified future.
This balance between fully electric and plug-in hybrids is the right range for the current market, as the fully electric premium market is still developing in several key markets. Plug-in vehicles remain crucial for plans to increase sales and profits in the coming years.
Like other Volvos, the XC90 is one of the safest vehicles available. It is equipped with an advanced safety cage and a comprehensive suite of active safety features to help keep road users safe. Using a front radar and camera, the XC90 can detect if you have veered into the opposite lane and safely return you to your lane to avoid the risk of a collision. Additionally, it can use brakes and steering to help avoid collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals.
Driving in the XC90 is enhanced with standard improved seat comfort and suspension. Each individual shock absorber can now mechanically adapt to road conditions to optimise both comfort and stability, providing a safer and more relaxed driving experience. And if you want to go faster, the optional air suspension works with an active chassis that monitors the vehicle, road, and driver 500 times per second to achieve the most comfortable ride possible.
Depending on whether you want easy access for entry or exit, better aerodynamics at high speed, or additional ride height for rough terrain, an XC90 with air suspension can lower by 20 mm or raise by 40 mm. Additionally, extra insulation has been added in certain parts of the vehicle, meaning there is even less wind and road noise.
The revamped interior includes a redesigned front cabin with a more horizontal dashboard shape, featuring decorative panels made from recycled materials for a more textured finish, divided by new vertical air vents. Improved lighting contributes to an even more luxurious feel at night.
The cabin has also been reconfigured to be more practical in response to feedback from current XC90 owners. Designers have created additional storage space in the centre console, with an extra cup holder, and the wireless phone charger is located behind the central partition console, separate from the main storage area, for added convenience.
There is also the option to choose between two semi-hybrid petrol variants. Both the B5 and B6 feature a 48V lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter generator that can help reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 15% in real driving conditions.
The prices for the renewed XC90 in Spain, now on sale, range from the most economical B5 version starting at 81,200 euros to the T8 with prices beginning at 91,150 euros.
