The Digital Intelligence Centre of the province of Alicante (Cenid), driven by the Alicante Provincial Council and the University of Alicante, has taken a further step in preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the province with the launch of the web portal 'Guide to the Snow Wells of the Province of Alicante'.
This innovative project, which combines decades of research with the latest digital technologies, will be presented at a public event on February 12th at 7 pm, at the Municipal Library, Sala Miquel Grau (c/ Rambla de la Libertad nº22), Sant Joan d'Alacant.
The portal aims to highlight the snow wells, one of the most unique historical legacies of the region. These structures, used for centuries as a key industry for food preservation, are now presented interactively and accessibly through this new website.
The event will feature Manuel Vicedo and Jaime Ramírez, responsible for the original research that led to the 'Guide to the Snow Wells of the Province of Alicante' in 2004. Both authors will provide an overview of their research work and explain the cultural and historical impact of these elements. Additionally, they will discuss how new technologies have allowed for expanded knowledge and dissemination. All this has resulted in a website that facilitates access to the history and natural wealth of Alicante.
Alongside the creators, Juan Pérez, content editor of the web portal (https://pousdeneu.ua.es/), will participate, moderating the event and presenting the portal, detailing its structure, contents, and the technological advances employed in its creation, such as the incorporation of aerial photos and geolocation.
The portal is organised into five major sections: 'Chapters', 'Regions', 'Routes', 'Sections', and 'New Wells'. While the first three faithfully reproduce the content of the original guide, the additional sections offer expanded resources. It also includes a digital library with over 4,500 pages of specialised content and an innovative drone library, allowing exploration of the wells from an aerial perspective thanks to spectacular drone recordings.
One of the main attractions for those interested in nature tourism is the 'Trails' section, which offers certified routes in the province of Alicante. These routes are notable for their accessibility, safety, and scenic value. Furthermore, the portal provides users with an interactive map that not only locates the snow wells throughout Spain but also includes cultural points of interest, museums, and audiovisual content that enrich the experience.
The portal's presentation will be a meeting place for lovers of history, tourism, and technology. An unmissable event that unites the past and future of Alicante with a single click.
