The swift intervention of an off-duty national police officer prevented a dangerous prank from ending in tragedy on Sunday afternoon in the leisure area of Playa de San Juan in Alicante. The officer was in a burger restaurant when he noticed a child had collapsed at the entrance of the establishment.
Immediately, he approached and upon seeing the child bleeding from the head, he contacted emergency services to request medical assistance. He, along with an employee of the establishment, aided the boy until the ambulance arrived. The testimonies gathered revealed that the incident allegedly stemmed from a risky game played by the victim and some friends: the viral 'mataleón' challenge.
This practice involves rendering a person breathless by strangling them from behind while holding them tightly by the neck. The affected minor lost consciousness and fell to the ground, resulting in a severe head injury accompanied by heavy bleeding. An urgent intervention was required, which likely saved his life.
Police investigations have determined that the injured youth was apparently playing with his friends, engaging in aggressive behaviour. A surveillance camera installed in the area will likely help clarify the events accurately, although it seems the challenge escalated until they decided to try the 'mataleón' technique.
For now, according to the information that has emerged, the family of the hospitalised boy prefers not to file a complaint, considering the incident an isolated event among friends. The alleged perpetrator of the consensual strangulation is fully identified and is only 13 years old, as reported by TodoAlicante.
