The Villena City Council has commenced archaeological surveys on the site adjacent to Plaza Mayor. This technical procedure is essential to advance the project for constructing a new municipal building for public use at this location. The contracted company has started analysing the subsoil of this municipally owned plot in search of potential archaeological remains that might necessitate protective measures.
The Councillor for Culture, María Server, explained that the operations are being carried out by a specialised company in coordination with the Municipal Service of Archaeology and Heritage (SEMAP). "The aim is to discover what might be in this area, a result of historical developments. Should anything be found, necessary measures for its protection, conservation, or promotion will be taken if required. Once this uncertainty is resolved, we can proceed with the project for utilising this land in the city centre," she commented.
In this regard, the Councillor for Social Services, Alba Laserna, stated, "The intention is to establish a new municipal building here for public service, addressing the current needs of the city and the City Council itself." The councillor believes that once the mandatory archaeological surveys are completed, progress can be made in drafting the valued report, an initial step towards drafting a definitive construction project.
The two councillors have met with various community groups and citizen entities to inform them about the actions to be undertaken.
