2025 starts positively for the automotive sector, still affected by the non-extension of the Plan Moves III, but showing an increase in new vehicle registrations, particularly electrified vehicles.
According to figures released on Monday by the manufacturers' association Anfac, car sales begin the year with a 5.3% growth, with 72,322 new registrations thanks to accumulated December sales that were finalized this month.
Sales of electrified cars (BEV+PHEV) in January saw a significant increase of 28.9%, reaching 10,254 new registrations. With this figure, the electrified market now represents 14.2% of the general market, 2.6 percentage points higher than the same month last year.
By sales channels, both private individuals and companies ended the month positively, with growth of 12.3% and 2.1%, respectively. However, sales to rental companies fell by 15.4% in January.
Anfac explains that this situation is largely due to the ECB's interest rate cuts, which make financing new vehicles cheaper. On the downside, they highlight the potential impact following the non-renewal of the Plan Moves III extension after the real decree that included it was repealed in the Congress of Deputies.
The dealership association Faconauto believes that "the decline of MOVES III, which we know is no longer operational, has not yet been felt. What is being noticed is a slowdown in electric vehicle orders, which will be reflected in the statistics in the coming days, and certainly, that statistic will be very negative."
Faced with this uncertainty, the Vehicle Sellers Association Ganvam believes that the market's growth rate slowed in the last approximately eight days of the month, so "the figures would have been higher if the Plan MOVES III extension had not been canceled on January 22. Hence the importance of the Administration acting urgently to reactivate an effective plan to boost demand at a time when the market is beginning to recover."
Registrations of light commercial vehicles increased by 13.3% in January, with 12,613 units. By channels in the first month, all managed to grow. Sales to self-employed individuals reached 2,498 units, up 40%. Meanwhile, rental companies achieved 1,106 units, with a 44.4% increase. In a smaller measure, but still positive, companies sold 5% more, with 9,009 sales.
In January, registrations of industrial vehicles, buses, coaches, and minibuses fell by 3.7%, with 2,940 sales. By vehicle type, industrial vehicles reached 2,562 sales, 7.6% less than the previous year. Meanwhile, the market for buses, coaches, and minibuses totaled 378 units, representing a 35.5% increase for the month.
The average CO2 emissions of cars sold in January stood at 112.2 grams of CO2 per kilometer, 3.5% lower than the average emissions of new cars sold in the same month of 2024.
