Spain's automotive fleet continues its expansion. In the second quarter of 2025, the number of insured vehicles in Spain reached 34,324,628 units, according to data from the Insured Vehicle Information File (FIVA) provided by the Association of Insurers Unespa (Spanish Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Entities). This represents an annual increase of 1.77%, adding nearly 600,000 more units than in the same period of the previous year.

This growth is not an exception but a consolidated trend. The report highlights that the Spanish vehicle fleet has been growing uninterruptedly for three years, accumulating thirteen consecutive quarters of increases.

During the second quarter of this year, more than 3.45 million vehicle registrations were recorded compared to 3.11 million deregistrations, resulting in a positive balance of 337,011 units between April and June 2025, covering all categories from cars and motorcycles to vans and trucks.

The FIVA collects data on all insured vehicles in Spain, whether they are cars, mopeds, motorcycles, vans, buses, industrial vehicles, etc. As it is mandatory to contract civil liability insurance for motor vehicles, the FIVA provides an accurate picture of the evolution of the national automotive fleet. The data from this file takes into account both vehicle registrations and the data of those that are deregistered.

Increasingly electrified, especially hybrids

This growth in the fleet is strongly driven by electrification, according to the latest figures provided by the manufacturers' association Anfac. Electrified vehicles (electric and plug-in hybrids) achieved a remarkable 133.3% increase in June, with 27,207 units sold, representing 19.3% of the total market that month and a new historical record for monthly sales. Year-to-date, electrified sales already total 111,200 units, an impressive 83.1% more than in the same period of 2024, reaching 15.4% of the general market share.

Within this trend, pure electric vehicles grew by 107.9% in June (12,295 units), while plug-in hybrids increased by 162.2% (14,282 units). However, the main players in the alternative market remain conventional hybrids (non-plug-in), which, with a growth of 23.7% in June and 46,748 registrations, consolidate as the preferred purchase option, representing 33.18% of the monthly market share and 42% of the global market for electrified, hybrid, and gas-powered cars.

These figures reflect a significant shift in Spanish consumer preferences towards more sustainable mobility options. With a total of 80,294 alternative vehicles (electrified, hybrid, and gas) sold in June, this segment already represents more than half of the total market (53.73%), accumulating 397,495 sales so far this year and 55% of the global market. This momentum is crucial for the decarbonisation of transport and the reduction of emissions in a country with an increasingly large fleet.

Despite this increase in the number of vehicles on the road and the rise of electrified vehicles, a significant concern persists: the age of the Spanish automotive fleet. Recent data places the average age of vehicles in Spain at around 14.5 years.

This figure contrasts significantly with the European average, which stands at approximately 12 years, implying that the Spanish fleet is significantly older. An ageing fleet entails greater risks in terms of road safety and a higher environmental impact due to higher emissions, posing a major challenge in the strategy for decarbonising transport and improving road safety.
