"Linguistic genocide by the PP" and "Yes to Valencian in Vinalopó" were the messages of several graffiti that appeared on the facade of the Popular Party headquarters in Petrer. The provincial group condemned this "violent act" against "democratic freedom and freedom in education".
The reason for the graffiti seems to be the current consultation on the choice of the base language in educational centres, which is ongoing on the Conselleria de Educación's website until March 4th.
The PP points to "an extremist group that shows its ways through violent and fascist language" as responsible for this vandalism at the Elda headquarters' door. Additionally, the provincial party joined the local group in denouncing the attack.
"It reflects a direct attack on freedom of expression and the right to free political ideology as fundamental pillars of our democracy," stated the provincial PP president, Toni Pérez. "This attack goes beyond the material damage caused by these graffiti."
At the same time, the provincial PP emphasized that "once again, the language of hate and cowardly actions that seek to intimidate those who defend their ideas have no place in a democracy, nor under our banner."
Pérez also called on other parties represented in the town of Petrer to "join the condemnation, as the PP does immediately when such incidents occur against other ideas or parties."
"In the Popular Party, we want and propose the freedom and right of citizens to choose, and for parents to freely decide in which language they want their children to study, those children who can now, for the first time, enjoy universal free education from zero to three years old, or those children who are now protected against linguistic imposition," concluded the provincial leader.
