The value of bottled wine from the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Alicante Wines has risen to 23.5 million euros, marking a 2.9% increase compared to the previous year. This growth is attributed to improved quality, recognitions, and an increasing number of wineries in the region, now nearing 40.
However, the Regulatory Council reports a decline in sales activity within the Spanish market, with 7.5 million units sold in Spain over the last year.
Regarding exports, Alicante wines have also seen a reduction in volume by 8%, down to 3.6 million bottles. The most significant drop is in foreign trade revenue, which has decreased by 13% to 7.77 million euros. While the price of Spanish wine increased by 1.4%, the volume exported fell by 5%.
Nevertheless, the national market remains strategic for the PDO Alicante, as it accounts for three-quarters of its sales. This makes it an atypical PDO, as most quality Spanish wines focus on export markets, given the decline in wine consumption in Spain and globally, which is estimated at -3.3% according to the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine).
